Tour overview
Mto wa Mbu, a busy market town at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, sits on the road to Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Thanks to its springs and fertile soil, it has drawn families from many different Tanzanian communities, making it one of the most culturally diverse villages in the country.
With a local guide, you explore by bicycle on flat, easy paths through banana plantations, irrigated rice fields and small farms, stopping to meet farmers and craftspeople. Watch woodcarvers and painters at work, learn how bananas are used for everything from food to brewing, and sit down to a home-style lunch of local dishes.
It is a relaxed, people-focused day for curious travelers and families, and it pairs perfectly with an afternoon game drive in Lake Manyara National Park.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a good cyclist?
No. The route is flat and taken at a gentle pace, with plenty of stops. If you prefer not to cycle, the tour can be done on foot.
Can I combine this with a Lake Manyara safari?
Yes. The park gate is just outside the village, so you can do the cultural tour in the morning and a game drive in the afternoon. Park fees are then added to the trip.
Can dietary needs be catered for at lunch?
Lunch is naturally rich in vegetarian dishes, and we can pass on other dietary requirements in advance. Please tell us when booking.
