Tour overview

The Usambara Mountains in north-eastern Tanzania are a world away from the safari circuit. Cool, green and dotted with terraced fields, small villages and patches of ancient rainforest, they are perfect walking country, centered on the old hill town of Lushoto.

Over three days you hike with a local guide along footpaths that link farms and villages, stand on the cliff edge at the Irente viewpoint with the Maasai Steppe spread out far below, and spend a night in a simple village guesthouse. Along the way you learn about the Shambaa people, their farming, food and traditions, and the area's colonial-era history.

This tour suits active travelers, hikers and culturally curious visitors looking for a relaxed adventure on foot. It also makes an excellent addition before or after a safari or a Kilimanjaro climb.
