Tour overview

Short on time but determined to see real wildlife? This two-day safari packs two of northern Tanzania's most rewarding parks into one easy trip from Arusha. It suits travelers adding a safari to a Kilimanjaro climb or a business trip, families with limited days, and anyone who wants a taste of the bush before heading to Zanzibar.

Day one is all about Tarangire National Park, famous for big elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and the Tarangire River that draws animals in the dry months. After a comfortable night in the green highlands around Karatu, you descend at dawn into the Ngorongoro Crater, a vast volcanic caldera where lions, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and, with luck, the rare black rhino share one remarkable landscape.

You travel in a private Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and your own guide, so the pace, the stops and the photo time are yours.

Highlights

  • Large elephant herds and giant baobabs in Tarangire National Park
  • Early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater for the best light and activity
  • Good chance of lion, buffalo, hippo and a possible black rhino sighting
  • Picnic lunch beside a hippo pool on the crater floor
  • Comfortable lodge night in the cool Karatu highlands
  • Private vehicle and guide, flexible to your pace

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1Arusha to Tarangire National Park and Karatu

Your guide collects you from your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro Airport in the morning for the drive of about 2 to 2.5 hours to Tarangire National Park. Spend the day exploring the park's river valley and baobab-studded plains, where elephant herds, giraffe, zebra, impala and buffalo are common and lion, leopard and tree-climbing pythons are sometimes spotted. Birdlife is outstanding too. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic site inside the park, then continue game viewing through the afternoon. In the late afternoon, drive about 1.5 hours up the escarpment to Karatu, a cool farming town near the Ngorongoro highlands, for dinner and the night.

Day 2Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive and Return to Arusha

After an early breakfast, drive about 45 minutes to the crater rim and descend roughly 600 meters to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater. Morning is the best time here: predators are active, the light is soft and the vehicles are fewer. Look for lion, spotted hyena, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, flamingos on Lake Magadi and, with luck, a black rhino in the open grassland. Enjoy a picnic lunch near the hippo pool before climbing back out in the early afternoon, within the crater's time limit. Drive back to Arusha, about 3 hours, arriving late afternoon for drop-off at your hotel or the airport.

Frequently asked questions

Is two days enough for a Tanzania safari?

Two days gives you a genuine safari experience with two very different parks and a strong chance of seeing much of the Big Five. If you can spare more time, adding the Serengeti makes for a fuller trip, but this route is ideal for a short window.

Can this safari start from Kilimanjaro Airport?

Yes. We can collect you directly from Kilimanjaro International Airport on the morning of Day 1, provided your flight lands early enough, or from any hotel in Arusha. Drop-off works the same way at the end.

Will we see rhinos in the Ngorongoro Crater?

The crater is one of the best places in Tanzania to see the endangered black rhino, but sightings are never guaranteed. Rhinos are often seen at a distance, so binoculars are very helpful.
