Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp)

Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp or Forest Camp, is the first campsite along the Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro. The name “Mti Mkubwa” comes from Swahili, meaning “big tree,” a reference to the towering rainforest trees surrounding the area.
This campsite is the first overnight stop for climbers beginning their Kilimanjaro trek via the Lemosho Route. It sits in the heart of the rainforest zone, creating a peaceful and scenic resting place for hikers.
Why Stay at Mti Mkubwa Camp and Facilities Available
- Perfect First Stop: Located just a few hours’ hike from the Londorosi Gate, this is where trekkers spend their first night on the mountain.
- Rich Wildlife Sounds: The camp is always alive with the sounds of birds and monkeys from sunrise to sunset.
- Exclusive Experience: Since Lemosho Route has fewer climbers than other Kilimanjaro trails, Mti Mkubwa is less crowded, making it a quiet and relaxing site.

Location of Mti Mkubwa campsite or Forest camp
Mti Mkubwa Camp is located near a valley within the rainforest zone, a few hours from Londorosi Gate. It sits on the northwestern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek from the gate to the campsite takes about 3 hours.
This area experiences high rainfall and humidity, with towering trees acting as natural windbreakers, making it a calm and sheltered resting point.
Important Notes for Climbers
- Not used for descent: Hikers only stay here while ascending Kilimanjaro via Lemosho Route.
- Small but scenic: The camp is smaller than other Kilimanjaro campsites, but since the Lemosho Route has fewer trekkers, it never feels too crowded.
